Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The Importance of Omega-3 And Omega-6 Fatty AcidsSome people who want to lose weight tend to think that to do so they must eliminate or reduce fats and oils in their diets. But drastically reducing or totally eliminating fats from one’s diet is not advisable because the body needs fats to function properly.

A better way is to use only healthy oils for cooking and also to make sure that you get those healthy oils like olive and canola oils, and omega-3 and omega 6 fatty acids. These types of oils provide some essential nutrients and provide health benefits. Omega-3, for example, has been established to protect and strengthen the heart.

All fats, however, are calorie dense. Hence, you will want to limit even the good varieties. You can do it by reducing small amounts only. Instead of deep frying, opt for pan frying with a tiny quantity of oil. Orgreenic is ideal for pan fried dishes.

If you love cakes, this is a great Paleo Breakfast idea with cakes. This one is made of carrots. Take 6 eggs, ½ cup of honey, 1 ½ cup of cooked and mashed carrots, orange rind, orange juice and about 3 cups of almond flour. Since we cannot use any grains such as wheat and rye, those are out of the equation. For people suffering with celiac diseases, this is a great recipe as well. Beat all the mixtures in a hand blender. When the mixure is completely done, pour in a baking pan. The pan should be greased so that you can take the cake out when done. Now bake it for about 45 miinutes in a preheated over at 350 degrees. When it appears done, stick a knife to see if it slides down smoothly. If everything seems okay bring the cake out, cool it and serve. This can be saved in the refrigerator and eaten over the week.

Roast Dinner is a Great Source of Iron

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

It is not easy to get a Sunday roast when you are living abroad, as this is pretty much just a British tradition. I moved over to the south coast of Spain a few years ago in order to live in the sun and get out of the hustle and bustle of city life back in London. Fortunately for me in the next town along to where I live there is a pub owned by a British couple and they do a lovely roast dinner each week. My partner and I will always be there to have a nice bit of lamb, pork, chicken or beef each week, and closer to Christmas they do a nice turkey roast as well. This is especially good for me because I have to eat more foods rich in iron due to an iron deficiency that I suffer from. Red meat and poultry are two of the best sources when it comes to the mineral iron.
